The utilisation problem isn't waiting for autonomy

TfL granted 701 new private hire driver licences in a single week, taking London past 111,000 drivers across 1,862 operators. The trade press draws the obvious conclusion: more drivers chasing the same demand means longer waits between jobs and lower utilisation. Idle capacity is usually discussed as an autonomous-vehicle problem arriving later this decade. It is a human one, in one city, this week.
